Ramdas Mane, Man building toilets using Thermocol: I was reading an inspiring story at Times (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/pune/pune-man-build-toilets-out-of-thermocol/articleshow/63053518.cms). Ramdas Mane, belongs to poor family, hailing from Satara district of Maharashtra, slept on the footpath for months, did part time jobs to complete his education, night shift at bus canteen to support his education. However, today Ramdas has become source of inspiration and instrumental in Open Defection Free (ODF) campaign. He is building toilets out of thermocol with cement coating in two hours. So far, he supplied 22,000+ toilets across the country for no profit, no loss basis. Received CSR's with Sanitation leadership award 2016, Limca Book of records in 2007 etc. He is also giving it as wedding gift to few girls (till date 25 toilets) who cannot afford to build toilets. His main company (Mane group of Companies) started in 1993, builds thermocol machines and exports them to more than 45 countries. 80% of the thermocol in India has been manufactured by Ramdas's machines!! Amazing innovation right? He got patent for this machine as well. Once sleeping on footpath, today Ramdas company's annual turnover is ~ Rs 40 crores and 70 employees working for them. Result of perseverance and determination.

Debris to Building Blocks-Engineering Innovation by Engineering Students:  Chennai alone generates about 1,200 tones of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste every day. Imagine how much debris generated from whole India? Kongu Engineering College, Erode, Tamilnadu students are trying to develop solution to this pollution menace. Recently they got an award in the Carbon Zero Challenge, organized by IIT Chennai for developing blocks from Concrete debris. They developed patented technology to recycle debris into hollow or paver blocks which can be used in construction. They tested the blocks and found more durable with better strength than conventional bricks and concrete blocks. Team developed economical process to segregate concrete waste from C&D debris, crushed to produce recycled aggregates of different particle sizes, mixed with sodium silicate (reduces porosity, increase durability, binds better), put through carbonation process (carbon dioxide is injected at various pressures which improves density), mixed with cement and water, moulded into blocks. This process cuts down CO2 emissions. The Ice Man of India , An engineer is solving Ladakh's water crisis: Chewang Norphel, 80-year-old, Retd. Civil Engineer from Ladakh in the northernmost Himalayas, India named as The Ice Man of India due to his contribution towards solving Ladakh's water crisis and fighting against climate change. Inspired by the nature's principle (An artificial glacier is formed when water is coming out of a semi-frozen pipe and when we collect in a small crater on the ground and freezing, forms like a glacier), today Norphel could develop 17 artificial glaciers across Ladakh and providing water. Ladakh is having extreme climatic conditions- both frost bite and heat stroke at the same time. 80% are farmers and major issue is unavailability of water during sowing period during Apr-June timeframe. During this time, glacial streams are frozen and rivers flow way too low to fetch water!! Chewang Norphel came as rescue and building artificial glaciers using his childhood learnt scientific principle and inspiration. Natural glaciers located around 5,000 feet above and 20-25 km away from the villages. They melt only after June time frame. He got an idea of building artificial glaciers at lower altitudes which would melt sooner due to relatively higher temperature. Construction work starts in October when the villagers divert the glacier streams and create embankments in the form of steps to slow down the velocity of water, depth is kept very low to freeze quickly. Amazing technique right? Each glacier costs upto 15 lakhs depending on size and width. He created one at Phukte valley which is supplying water to five villages and just costed 90,000 rupees. Retired from his government post in 1994 after 34 years of service, now Norphel spends time in developing these solutions, meditation, kitchen garden, with students all over world, assisting NGOs to take up this concept outside. He is pouring tons of inspiration and helping Ladakh region! Thank you ET for publishing such an amazing story. To read more, please do visit

Richard Appiah Akoto (33 years old), An ICT Teacher from Ghana, Africa became great example on how a pedagogy should be in adverse conditions! He became viral when he posted his blackboard covered with drawing of a the features of a Microsoft Word processing window using multi-colored chalk. The school has no computers. His facebook posting got 9.5K likes. Finally this message reached to Microsoft & other computer giants. Microsoft promptly responded and providing necessary equipment to the school.
